Basic Campfire Sourdough Bread is the time old American classic.  It is very easy to get a sourdough starter going and then cook delicious and filling bread all week long from it.     Bread is such a comfort food in any survival or disaster situation.

Cook in a Dutch Oven or even use a ceramic or glass casserole dish on coals.   Pie tins work in a pinch or even wrapped in a tin foil packet.  you can even roll out the dough and wrap it on a stick and cook directly over the campfire.

Basic Campfire Sourdough Bread Ingredients:

  • 2 c Batter
  • 2 tb Sugar
  • 1/8 ts Soda
  • 1/4 c Melted shortening
  • 3 ts Baking powder
  • 1 ts Salt

Basic Campfire Sourdough Bread Directions:

  1.  In large bowel or on a flat wooden kneading surface, Pour 2 c. batter into depression in a quantity of flour.
  2. Add melted shortening, soda dissolved in small amount of water, sugar and salt.
  3. Mix until you form a ball you can handle.
  4. Knead just the flour until the dough will hold.
  5. Set aside to raise double.
  6. Grease a dutch oven or cast iron skilled well.
  7.  Cut, place in greased pan.
  8. Brush with milk. Set aside to raise double – 1/2 hour.
  9. Bake at 400 degrees F. 35 to 45 minutes.
