Survival Pizza Dough

This pizza dough recipe is easy to make on the fly and creates a lovely, chewy dough that puffs up in some places and crisps up in others.  Pizza is a great survival food and a favorite around here.   You c an make it with few ingredients and can use just about anything as a topping.

The key to good pizza is making sure that the oven is as hot as it can possibly get, and that you have either a pizza or bread stone or a hefty baking tray hot and awaiting the arrival of your pizza.  You can use a BBQ or gas grill or a fireplace to cook up pizza in a survival or disaster environment.  red bricks work very well as a floor if you don’t have a pizza stone to throw on top of a BBQ.



One large or six small pizzas



  • 150ml/5 fl oz lukewarm water
  • ½ tbsp dried yeast
  • A pinch of sugar
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 250g/9oz strong white flour, plus extra for dusting
  • 1 tsp salt



  1. In a bowl, mix the warm water with the yeast, sugar and oil.Leave for 8‑10 minutes or so to froth up.
  2.  Place the flour and salt in a large bowl and make a well in the center. Pour in the wet ingredients and mix with your hands or a spoon until you have a sticky dough.
  3. Keep adding handfuls of flour or drops of water until you have a workable consistency.
  4. Turn the dough out on to a well-floured surface and knead for five minutes until stretchy and glossy.
  5. Return to the bowl, cover with cling film or damp towel so that the top o the dough does not dry out.  Leave to rise somewhere warm for one hour or longer (longer is better)
  6. Turn out again and knead for a few more minutes before rolling out on a floured surface, then transfer to a pizza stone or a hot tray to cook.
