Baking White Bread Baked in a Coffee Can is insidiously easy and is a great way to have a fresh loaf of bread in any disaster or survival situation.    The ingredients are very simple and all you need is a good  medium-hot heat source and a coffee can.

Mix up the ingredients, let the dough rise for an hour or so, then place the can in the campfire coals and in an hour or so, you will have a perfect fresh loaf of bread.  Use the plastic lids from the coffee can to seal up and store the rising dough overnight for baking inthe morning for the days bread.

  • 4-4 1/2cups >all-purpose flour, sifted
  • 1 package active dry yeast
  • 12 cup milk
  • 12 cup water
  • 12 cup vegetable oil
  • 14 cup sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 eggs, powdered eggs work well as a substitute

  1. Sift flour onto piece of waxed paper. Measure 1-1/2 cups of this flour into a large bowl; stir in yeast.
  2. In saucepan or bowl, place milk, warm water, oil, sugar and salt. Set ol warm, stirring to blend.
  3. Add liquid ingredients to flour and yeast in bowl and beat until smooth.
  4. Blend in eggs.
  5. Add enough additional flour to make a stiff batter, beating until smooth and elastic. Spoon batter into 2 well-greased 1-pound coffee cans.
  6. Cover with plastic snap-on lids and place in a warm spot for dough to rise.
  7. When dough has almost reached top of cans, about 1 hour, remove lids and bake at 375 F. for 35 minutes or until bread is high and well-browned.  You can put the an directly in the coals of a campfire or on a BBQ With briquets
  8. Let cool in cans for 10 minutes before turning out on rack to cool completely.
